Description:
Written after the shootings at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, when the composer lived in the neighboring community of Eugene, this elegiac piece is reminiscent of Samuel Barber's 'Adagio for Strings.' There is one high D in Trumpet 1 and a high B-flat in Horn 1, both of which can be played down an octave. Scored for piccolo, 2 flutes, oboe, English horn, 2 bassoons, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, baritone sax, 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, timpani, and four percussion parts covering marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, chimes, suspended cymbal, and bass drum.
