Tokyo Nocturne was commissioned by the Tokyo Wind Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023. The premiere took place under the direction of Maestro Keita Matsui on 5 November of the same year. The work begins with a quiet modal phrase in the solo clarinet, which intensifies with the introduction of more instruments, until the voices thin out over a static, muted brass chord and a chorale-like passage in the woodwinds begins. This becomes more intense until the brass enters with their own chorale, which in turn intensifies to a solemn climax in full instrumentation. The optimistic mood abruptly changes to an uncertain mood, but immediately afterwards the brass chorale is heard again, this time played by the woodwinds in a quieter and calmer version. The music builds up again to a climax and the brass majestically repeat the clarinet melody from the beginning, before the mood finally relaxes to bring the work to a peaceful conclusion.
