Description:
Verdi Variations was commissioned by Biblioservice Gelderland (Arnhem, The Netherlands) to the italian composer and conductor Lorenzo Della Fonte, already knowed for his previous works as "Exortus", "Il lago era immobile.", "Voci da Brescia, 1974", etc.
The composition is based upon the famous "Slaves Choir" theme from "Nabucco", one of the most popular song in the opera world. After a short intro, the theme is taken in minor key (original is in major), and serves as basis for 6 following variations: two different rhythmic fragmentations, chorale, interlude, march and chaconne. A festive finale closes the work of about 11' long.
Inside there are some chamber passages, unconventional composing language, as well as many meter changes followed by intense melodic movements.
The piece is intended as grade 5, and requires a full symphonic band.
With "Verdi Variations", Della Fonte paid homage to one of the greatest italian composer ever, beloved by million of people around the world, to celebrate 2001 Verdi's death centennial.
