Description:
101 was conceived as a tribute to the composer Elliot Carter to commemorate the 101st anniversary of his birth. Carter wrote Eight Pieces for Timpani, an essential creation in the repertoire for percussion, while undertaking in-depth research in composition for these instruments.
In 101 we can savour different kinds of performance sequences and timbres that confer onto the timpani an infinite array of sonic possibilities. Deeper inroads are made into the metric modulations as well as into the various time solutions in the amalgam of the work's phrasing; all of this gains coherence thanks to a small motif, initially presented as disfigured, and which is only fully developed at the concluding part of the piece. The eclecticism of the work requires the interpreter to convey the different resources of the instrument, ranging from its more rhythmic and virtuous passages to those characterised by enhanced melody and timbre.
