The introductory sonorous Andante is in a free form. The 2nd movement of the trio comprises 10 strict as well as free variations on the Guggisberger Lied. A spirited finale concludes the playful trio.

The quintet is a contrapuntal cabinet piece of the finest quality. The technically less demanding work is also excellently suited for string orchestra. Effective!
