The clock tower of Westminster Palace in London houses a famous bell: Big Ben. Weighing 13.7 tonnes, it is one of the heaviest bells in the world. Big Ben first chimed on July 11, 1859. Big Ben was named for the politician Benjamin Hall (1802-1867) who oversaw the construction of the clock tower; Hall was also called ‘Big Ben' because of his tall stature.
