I wrote this piece in 2019 for the beginner band of the Valdres Junior Brass Band, which I was conducting at then. As the title suggests, the piece is a simple calypso, featuring the characteristic syncopations typical of the style. The original version consisted of what here is the Intro, and the A, B, and F sections, but without the modulation. The piece has therefore been somewhat extended, including an open drum section where the percussion group can let loose a bit—either by playing what I have suggested in the score or through free improvisation. I have written a total of four percussion parts, and Part 1C can also be played on a melodic percussion instrument. So, if needed, up to five percussionists can be involved.
