The Egyptian March was one of the highlights of the Vienna Philharmonic’s 2026 New Year’s Concert. The work was first performed on July 6, 1869, in Pavlovsk, Russia. A unique feature of the piece is that, in addition to Orientalist motifs, it includes a 22-measure sequence in which the musicians sing. With this march, Johann Strauss commemorates the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. In 1871, Strauss dedicated this march to Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden.
