The Earl of Oxford March is a classic piece that many of us have played in bands or brass ensembles. It's contrapuntal, with plenty of challenges in all the parts.
It was likely composed at the end of the 14th century in connection with the English celebration of their victory over the Spanish and French Armada.
The piece, which the composer William Byrd called "Marche Before The Battle," became known as "The Earl of Oxford’s March" and is a part from from the suite "The Battell". This is pure program music, which was rare in Byrd's production. It was composed while Byrd was at the height of his career and serves as a perfect opening number for concerts.
Little is known about Byrd's early life, but he implied that he was born around 1540. It is believed that his teacher was Thomas Tallis (1505-1585). Byrd was hailed as "the father of English music" and he was a teacher to renowned composers such as Morley, Bull, Tomkins, and Weelkes.
With the present 4-part arrangement, this brilliant music is now also available for bands and ensembles with limited instrumentation.
