Description:
This set of two contrasting movements is derived from one of Telemann's many trio sonatas which were originally intended for two treble instruments and continuo (keyboard plus a bass instrument). This arrangement for three double basses and harp may also be performed using one or more cellos to substitute for bass 1 and/or bass 2, or it works nicely with three cellos. Although the harp part adds a special character, it may be played on a piano or omitted entirely.
For effective performance with basses, clarity of sound must be the foremost consideration. A clear, focused sound is more important than volume. In the Allegro giocoso, be sure to leave sufficient space between the notes and utilize off string bowings to achieve a light, dancing effect.
