Three Miniature Sketches was commissioned by James Stroud for the 2026 James Stroud Youth Competition. The work was inspired by Mr. Stroud's suggestions and is conceived as a set of three contrasting character pieces that challenge young guitarists both musically and technically.
Each sketch presents a distinct musical world with a painterly approach to color, texture, and atmosphere while incorporating many of the guitar's essential techniques for competitors to demonstrate.
Toccatina, the opening sketch, is bold and energetic. Flowing arpeggios drive the music forward, while a mysterious tremolo section provides a striking contrast before the return of the opening material as well as giving competitors a chance to showcase their tremolo.
Night Song is a lyrical, nocturnal meditation inspired by the expressive qualities of abstracted and fragmented traditional Turkish musical motives. The subtle harmonic colors create an intimate, atmospheric soundscape.
The final sketch, Humoresque, is virtuosic, playful, and highly idiomatic for the guitar. Beyond its technical demands, the work requires a strong sense of character and imagination. Cross string passages, double stops, triplet figurations, arpeggios, and expressive slurs are woven together to create a lively and engaging conclusion to the set.
