Description:
This piece was commissioned by and dedicated to the Atlantic Guitar Quartet, which I had the pleasure of meeting during a summer festival at Peabody. The inspiration for the main theme came directly from the ensemble's name. While "Atlantic" can carry many meanings, the first image that came to my mind was the ocean. In fact, I was traveling with my family along the coast of Bahia, right by the Atlantic, when I began drafting the initial ideas for the theme.
The variation form provided the perfect framework to explore these melodic ideas, navigating through textures and effects tailored specifically for a guitar quartet. Structurally, the piece is designed as a large, continuous crescendo. The variations are interconnected, creating an uninterrupted flow of transformation. While the piece largely leans into a darker, minor-key mood, the only major key is featured in a brief, central fugue built on the inverted theme. This is a challenging and rewarding piece that requires not only individual technical skill, but also a solid and mature ensemble practice.
