Description:
A sweeping theme that emerges from a free introduction is contrasted in the middle section of *Canto spirituoso* with a powerful, driving rhythm whose origins in Bulgarian folk music are unmistakable in every measure. Following a shortened reprise of the theme, the mood intensifies through a coda-like melody played in tremolo, which now paraphrases the theme of the Canto and prepares the conclusion. In this tremolo section, Balkanski employs additional ornaments such as glissandi or double strokes, somewhat comparable to the small melodic movements sometimes found in the tremolo of flamenco music, yet with a very distinctive resonance.
