Description:
Modal Fantasy makes extensive use of the musical material I originally employed in my composition Bulgaresque No. 3 for saxophone and guitar. I felt that the guitar part possessed sufficient developmental potential to be expanded and transformed into an independent work for solo guitar.
As in most of my compositions, the influence of Bulgarian folk music—and, more broadly, that of the Balkans—is evident throughout the piece, particularly through the use of asymmetric rhythms and a polymodal musical language.
