It is true what is widely publicized about Tampa Bay, Florida being the lightning capital of the world. However, if you live in our neighborhood near the Manatee River in Bradenton, just a 45 minute drive south of Tampa, you would swear "we" are the storm capital!
In Fury of the Storm, I have worked to capture at least three elements of extreme storm experience on the West Coast of Florida: first, the anticipation, hearing the ominous low rumble with dark clouds over part of the sky contrasting with bright sunshine to split the difference. Secondly, you feel the short bursting wind gusts with huge raindrops intermittently plopping all around as a warning. And lastly, the ear – splitting excitement of pounding lightning bolts that literally feel like they just hit 5 feet from your house. And yes, sometimes it’s closer than that! Next time we meet, ask about a couple of "hair raising" experiences!
