Preface to the edition:

The classical guitar was rarely prominently represented in Astor Piazzolla's work - but this is precisely where its particular appeal lies: the idea of transferring his sound world to two classical guitars opens up new perspectives on tango nuevo, beyond the usual instrumentation. Long before Piazzolla's time, the guitar played a central role in Argentinian folk music. For Piazzolla, it was more than just a sounding body: it was a living link to the musical soul of Argentina - to its origins, its complexity, its inner pulse.

Piazzolla revolutionized the tango, opened it up to classical concert forms and infused it with elements of jazz harmony. His style thrives on the interplay between rhythmic-percussive passages and lyrical-melodic lines, carried by harmonic sophistication and emotional depth. The classical guitar in particular - with its ability for fine tonal nuances - proves to be the ideal medium for the realization of this musical complexity. These arrangements for two guitars are the result of an intensive study of the quintet versions, piano reductions and studio and live recordings. My main concern was to enrich the repertoire for classical guitar with these arrangements - not as a mere transcription, but as an artistic expansion in the spirit of Piazzolla.

I recorded the majority of these versions on the CD "Misteriosa Vida". The resulting, technically accessible works offer performers insights into the expressive diversity of a composer whose music is dramatic, passionate - and at the same time profoundly free.

Jury Clormann

My special thanks go to Urs Staub for his many years of valuable collaboration on these transcriptions.

Jury Clormann is an internationally renowned guitarist who studied classical guitar with Prof. Karl Scheit. Travels and in-depth studies in Andalusia and South America have made him one of the most accomplished interpreters of Spanish and Argentinian guitar music in Europe. As a professor of classical guitar, chamber music and didactics at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), he has been shaping the next generation of guitarists for many years. Concerts, seminars and master classes have taken him all over Europe. His album "La madrugada - Guitarra Argentina" was named Swiss Record of the Month in March 1992.
