Description:
The overture is a musical form often found in operas. Its purpose was to prepare the audience for the performance to come. Lully favored the French overture style, consisting of a slow–fast–slow sequence of movements. In Italy, however, the more common pattern was fast–slow–fast. For this overture, I chose to adopt the Italian style.
My inspiration comes from the overtures frequently performed by wind ensembles (concert bands). These works are highly energetic and dynamic. I have also always admired Mauro Giuliani’s Grand Overture.
A wonderful piece with which to begin a concert.
