Description:
Composed in 2014 for the composer’s friend and ex-pupil Jesse Galdal-Gibbs (who gave its first performance) and his Spanish wife Alicia Pol Méndez. The work is 15 minutes in duration and comprises the five contrasting sections, performed without break. Composer’s note: This Partita for solo guitar takes its title from John Donne’s Nocturnall upon S. Lucies Day, December 13. In the closing stanza the poet enjoins young lovers "to enjoy their summer all": Since shee enjoyes her long nights festivall, Let mee prepare towards here, and let me call This houre her Vigill, and her Eve, since this Both the years, and the dayes deep midnight is. Some passages of the music use verbal patterns from earlier in the poem, as a sort of ‘suppressed vocalisation’. But as a whole the piece takes its own course, though always influenced by and responsive to Donne’s play of moods and tones – words. – RH, October 2022 –
