Description:
The very charming "Canzona prima per canto solo" presented here comes from the "Primo Libro delle Canzoni" for 1-4 voices and basso continuo from 1628. The melody part was taken over unchanged into the 1st mandolin in the plucked orchestra setting. The "Lachrimae Antiquae" are certainly among the most frequently performed works of early music. Dowland left this work in instrumental versions for solo lute, keyboard instrument and viol consort; it also found its way into his "Second Booke of Ayres" as the lute song "Flow my Tears". This arrangement is based on the version for viol consort. Purcell's chaconne "Two in one upon a Ground" was originally written for 2 melody voices and basso continuo, with the melody voices (played by the mandolins in the arrangement) interacting in canon over a six-bar basso ostinato.
