The title Libertango is a portmanteau of Libertad - Spanish for liberty - and Tango, marking Piazolla's break in the mid 1970s from Classical Tango to Tango Nuevo; the composer revolutionised tango by including jazz and classical elements into the traditional style. It is one of his most performed works and arranged here for Oboe soloist and band.
