Basel Variations on "z'Basel an mym Rhy" by John Glenesk Mortimer is a lively and charming work composed in 2007 to celebrate the Atlantic crossing of a solar-powered Swiss boat. It was premiered in New York by the ensemble I Salonisti and pays tribute to both the innovative power and cultural identity of Switzerland. The work is based on the well-known Basel folk song Z'Basel an mym Rhy, a landmark of the city of Basel, whose title means "In Basel on my Rhine". Mortimer uses this theme in a series of varied and colorful variations. These include an elegant waltz, a rousing march and a fast, lively swing version. Each variation highlights a different facet of the original melody while retaining its distinctive character. The composition is both accessible and brilliant and delights musicians and audiences alike. Between tradition and modernity, this work impressively demonstrates how Swiss folk music can be reinterpreted with wit and creativity.
