Description:
The composer wrote her trio for the Haydn celebrations in Eisenstadt in 2009. Inspired by the information that Haydn had wanted the slow movement of his 'Funeral Symphony' No. 44 for his funeral, Kats-Chernin, in order to connect with her illustrious predecessor, drew on Haydn's rich wealth of motifs and composed a free fantasia on them, with an extended sustained passage. In the end, however, lively rhythmic finesse gains the upper hand, as is typical of both composers. Calliope is not only the muse of string playing and elegy, but also a fairground steam organ, so that the contrasting spheres are also captured in the title.
