Description:
I composed this cantata for the Edinburgh Gaelic Choir. The Scottish Gaelic text is by the poet Myles Campbell (Maoilios Caimbeul) from the Isle of Skye. The text is a dialog between the ocean and mankind. At first they praise each other, but then the people (the chorus) lament the cruelty of the ocean: so many men lose their lives there, leaving behind grieving widows. This was a significant part of life for the fishing communities in the Hebrides. The ocean (baritone solo) retorts that mankind is destroying it by polluting it. Eventually, the people acknowledge this accusation and vow to respect nature in the future.
