The structure of this quintet corresponds to Debussy's Cello Sonata, which I played in New York in 2010 with the American cellist Andrew Yee, a member of the Attacca Quartet. The first movement of my work begins with a short introduction that dissolves into four intensely lyrical passages and showcases all five instruments. A sequence with three major chords (C flat, B flat and G) ends this movement as it began. The central movement, a quiet, rather short scherzo, also very lyrical, with sensual harmonies, ends with a short quotation from Debussy's Première Rhapsodie. As in Debussy's sonata, this leads imperceptibly to the third and final movement, an intense, rhythmically dynamic finale. Here the theme of the first movement is repeated, with jazz-like pizzicato accompaniment figures. The three key chords of the first movement are heard repeatedly before a fleeting overview of the introduction ends the work with an upbeat. A quirky, entertaining movement. Roger Steptoe, September 2012, Uzerche, France The work was premiered by David Campbell and the Sacconi Quartet on July 22 in the Great Hall of the University of Aberystwyth, Wales (UK), as part of the Aberystwyth MusicFest 2012. The French premiere - with David Campbell and the Quatuor Girard - took place on August 17, 2012 at the Festival de Musique Classique d'Uzerche, Corrèze, France. The concert was supported by the Fondation d'Entreprise Banque Populaire, Paris.
