Description:
The text for Bach's cantata "Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort" was published in Salomon Frank's "Evangelische Andachts-Opffer" as early as 1715, during Bach's time in Weimar. However, the concise but forceful work itself was not composed until ten years later in Leipzig and was first heard on July 29, 1725, the 9th Sunday after Trinity. Its dramatic-musical focus is clearly on the first movement, a sombre, almost operatic scene for baritone and string orchestra in B minor. In contrast, the following aria for tenor with obbligato oboe accompaniment is much more intimate, and the duet between soprano and alto - accompanied only by the continuo - takes a back seat to the first movement in terms of tonal language and expression. In between are two extended recitatives, the first of which leads into an arioso. The range of expression within the cantata is enormous, its opening movement a masterpiece of Bachian drama.
