Description:
Dectet was composed in 1998, commissioned by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, for a ensemble of winds, strings, and piano. Unlike many of David Sampson’s other works, this composition is not based on a specific program or narrative plot. Rather, the music unfolds through four contrasting movements, each with its own distinct character. The work combines somber, lyrical, nostalgic, and energetic moods. The third movement is reminiscent of Shostakovich’s ironic and melancholic waltzes, while the finale captivates with its rousing energy and virtuosic writing. The second movement holds special significance. It was composed during an extraordinary creative surge and evolved into a passacaglia full of sorrow and contemplation. A few days later, the composer learned of the sudden death of his friend Alan Balter, a conductor and clarinetist. As a result, this movement took on a deeply moving significance and became a musical tribute to remembrance and memory.
