Description:
Dies irae for organ and percussion by Zsigmond Szathmáry induces an immense effect on the listener through its advanced sonority; the work places correspondingly high demands on the performers.
The 17-line sequence "Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum in favilla" (i.e. "Day of wrath, that day, it will dissolve the universe into dust"), which deals with the Last Judgement, is the emotional climax of the Latin requiem mass. In the commentary to his work, the composer describes his childhood memories of the Second World War: "fear, bunkers, bland caraway soup and the wailing of sirens". The latter is even used in the piece.
