Die Kantate geht auf zwei frühere Werke Bachs zurück: Urform war die Kantate 'Alles, was von Gott geboren' [Weimar 1715, BWV 80a], eine zweite Fassung [BWV 80b] entstand zwischen 1727 und 1731 in Leipzig. Der schlichte Choralsatz, der diese 2. Fassung eröffnet, ist in der vorliegenden Version [BWV 80] im Anhang mitgeteilt.
