Exotic Dances is a brilliant and colorful suite by composer and trumpeter Thierry Caens, written for solo trumpet in C or flugelhorn in B♭, accordion, piano, strings and percussion. The work consists of three contrasting movements, each dedicated to an important musical personality. Spanish Fire Dance, dedicated to Chick Corea, unfolds with fiery Iberian energy and combines rhythmic virtuosity with harmonies inspired by modern jazz. The trumpet enters into a lively dialog with the ensemble, supported by incisive percussion sounds. Parisian Waltz, a tribute to Marcel Azzola, evokes the elegance and poetry of Parisian musette balls in a refined and expressive waltz. The accordion plays a central role and envelops the soloist's melody in a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Finally, Biguine Tonic, dedicated to Alain Jean-Marie, celebrates Caribbean rhythms in a bright and danceable setting. Percussion (drums, glockenspiel, cajón, vibraphone) adds a sunny, driving pulse. Through this original instrumentation, Thierry Caens creates a festive, virtuosic and deeply expressive work.
