The instrumentation is based on soprano voice, flute and orchestra or piano, and represents one of the most famous orchestrations in the history of the opera. Complex situations can be illustrated particularly well if one uses voice and flute in a kind of musical contest that creates a direct link between the virtuosity of voice/instrument and the emotional charge of a particular scene. This work is a beautiful example for the close relation between lyric vocals and instrumental melodic expression.
