Description:
Haydn's so-called Great Organ Solo Mass in E flat major is one of the composer's works that was widely performed early on. The mass, which is scored separately with two English horns in the wind parts, was composed around 1770, during Haydn's first years as Kapellmeister to the Esterházy princes. Despite the "grateful" organ part, which is treated soloistically for long stretches, the Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, composed for a Marian feast, is rarely performed today. The new edition aims to provide impetus for this.
