The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach drew on a tried and tested pattern: the chorale is performed by the four-part vocal ensemble, with the melody in the soprano. This is embedded in an animated and independent orchestral setting. For verses 2-4, Bach chose the form of the aria with an extremely differentiated instrumentation that grows steadily from movement to movement, beginning with a continuo aria (1st movement) and ending with an accompaniment with violin, obbligato bassoon and continuo (4th movement). A simple four-part chorale movement concludes the cantata.
