Ist es eine ausführliche Diskussion wert, ob Mason das Thema selbst geschrieben oder es doch von Händel übernommen hat? Wenn das Thema einfach aus einer abwärts geführten Tonleiter besteht, sollte niemand ernsthaft Anspruch auf Originalität erheben wollen. Wir lassen das Thema also offen… Üblicherweise hat das Lied vier Strophen - so auch in unserer Bearbeitung. Die ersten beiden Strophen sind als Wiederholung angelegt, in der dritten Strophe bekommt das Cello Raum für ein Solo, und die vierte Strophe führt abgewandelt auf den Beginn zurück. Amerikanische Schulkinder fügen übrigens gerne noch eine fünfte Strophe hinzu: "Joy to the world, the teacher's dead". Damit man die Strophen nicht einfach hintereinander weghämmern muß, dienen uns neo-barocke Sequenzen als Scharniere zwischen den einzelnen Strophen. Mason hätte es sicher gefallen. Und es passt auch gut zu Händel.
