The composer:
Nicola Conforto (born in 1718 in Naples—died after 1788 in Spain?), was a highly regarded opera composer. The famous castrato Farinelli commissioned an opera from him in 1751 while in Madrid. Conforto emigrated to Spain in 1755 and was showered with glory at the court of King Ferdinand VI. This concerto was likely composed in Spain, perhaps at the request of a wealthy Neapolitan, since the manuscript probably originates from Naples, which was under Spanish rule at the time.

The Work:
This light concerto was undoubtedly intended for an amateur mandolin player, who was simply to be accompanied by two violins and a cello. But thanks to its musical quality and the contrasts between tutti and soli, it is also suitable for public performance with a full string orchestra. The first part of the second movement borrows heavily from the second movement of Tommaso Prota’s Sonata for Mandolin and Bass. This sonata movement and excerpts from the third movement of the present concerto—which is arranged for two violins or mandolins—were published in Paris in 1765 in the collection *Les petites Récréations de la Campagne* (Book 4) for two violins or mandolins. This concerto was therefore likely composed in the early 1760s or late 1750s.
