La Culebra (The Snake) is a traditional Mariachi son except unlike most sones, which are characterized by syncopated rhythms and an alternation between 3/4 and 6/8 time, La Culebra is set to lively 16th notes in a rhythmic 3/4 feel. This C major piece is composed of three distinct sections in the ABACA form. Changes to the dominant and relative minor add drive and intensity to the piece as the story of the snake encounter unfolds. Gritos (whistles and calls) are encouraged throughout the piece!
