Description:
Franz Schubert's "Mass in G" is one of the most popular Mass settings: its charming, song-like melodies—particularly in the "Kyrie" and "Credo"—provide an enchanting counterpoint to the more concertante passages in the "Gloria" and "Sanctus." For a long time, an all-string orchestral arrangement was considered Schubert's definitive version, while a version with woodwinds, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expansion by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. Since the mid-1990s, however, it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were composed by Franz Schubert himself for ad libitum use. This edition presents the so-called "Klosterneuburg version"—with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's woodwind parts—as an Urtext in accordance with Schubert's own intended instrumentation. / Also available in a version from the "Chor & Orgel" series (Carus 40.675/45).
