Yet even in this field of 'pure, absolute' music, Kirchner's work has a theatrical quality which shows itself very clearly in his choice of titles (e.g. Mysterion, Il canto della notte, Lamento d'Orfeo, Exil).In this Quintet Kirchner manages to use the various possible combinations of the different instruments to create highly expressive music.
