Gounod's "Messe à la mémoire de Jeanne d'Arc" was composed in 1887 for a festive mass in Reims to commemorate the entry of the national heroine into the city on the occasion of the coronation of Charles VII in 1429.

A cappella or accompanied only by organ, the work is largely in an archaic style in the tradition of Palestrina. The magnificent "Prélude" that precedes it, which was played by eight trumpets, three trombones and organ at the premiere, conveys the royal entry into the cathedral; this edition also offers a version of the movement for piano and organ in the performance material. For the "Offertoire", Gounod composed a cantilena for violin and organ (piano) as a vision of Joan of Arc, which is also included in the edition.
