German composer Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) composed this wind Octet, Op. 216 in 1892, though the reason is unclear. The four-movement work may have been written at the request of Paul Taffanel's "Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent." This octet shares the same instrumentation as Franz Lachner's Op. 156 and Théodore Gouvy's Op. 71: flute, oboe, two clarinets, two bassoons, and two horns.
