Leroy Osmon's Octet is an unusual example of the genre. Four woodwinds, two trombonists, and two percussionists allow Osmon unusual timbres and an unexpected mix of musical ideas - brassy strikes against smoother melodies, the juxtaposition of fanfares and quiet mystical sounds, and surprising blends of tonal color.
