When Brenda Vongova of the United Nations Chamber Music Society asked me to write a ten-minute arrangement of Juraj Filas’s "Requiem: Oratio spei" for a six-piece chamber ensemble without voices, it presented me with a major challenge. How could the original—a monumental work lasting eighty minutes for large orchestra, choir, and soloists—be condensed into such a compact ensemble? Since I have long been familiar with and admired Filas’s music (and had the opportunity to study with him occasionally in Prague before his untimely death in 2021), I decided to reduce the work to those sections that I found most musically impressive, regardless of their liturgical function, in order to ultimately create a small chamber music suite. To clearly distinguish my arrangement from Filas’ original work, I titled the suite "Prayer of Hope", the English translation of Filas’ Latin title "Oratio spei". At the same time, I wanted to preserve the connection to the original, so I decided to insert the original Latin text in parentheses above the instrumental parts wherever it seemed appropriate. This is intended to remind the performers that, in its very essence, this music is exactly what it expresses: a prayer. My sincere thanks go to Stanislav and Marta Kotyza of the Harmony Foundation for their generous support in the creation of this arrangement.
