Description:
With "Dixit Dominus" (Ps 109 [110]) and "Beatus vir" (Ps 111 [112]), two of Vivaldi's most important double-choir church compositions are available in new critical editions. With the vocal-instrumental movement type "in due Cori", Vivaldi drew on the old Venetian (i.e. for him native) tradition of festive multi-choral music-making, whose techniques he of course combined and enriched with those from the concerto, cantata and opera. Following a custom of the time, the "Dixit" is preceded by an "Introduzione al Dixit": a prologue in the form of a three-movement Latin solo cantata, whose praising text leads to the actual psalm composition with the request "Ergo cantate Dixit" ("Therefore now sing the Dixit"). As this solo for soprano, strings and basso continuo can also be performed on its own, it is published separately as CV 40.006.
