The harmony and colour that can be achieved by three strokes of the gong were translated by him in the score. The last movement has a quotation of Clara Schumann that lingers behind a modern tonal veil - a wonderful 'kunstgriff', an inventive artistic technique, by the composer whose piece was cheered like a home victory.'
