Description:
Born in the same year as Mozart, Joseph Martin Kraus, who, like the famous Salzburg composer, was highly gifted musically and also died far too young, has received more attention again in recent years. And rightly so! He wrote the Requiem in 1775 at the age of 19, probably for his home parish church in Buchen/Odenwald. Even in this early work, Kraus shows himself to be a true representative of the musical "Sturm und Drang". For all its youthful recklessness and unconventionality in terms of compositional technique, the music is characterized by great seriousness and expressiveness, combined with mostly dark instrumental timbres, abruptness and at times even abruptness.
