Description:
The piece is named after the 4th and last movement, which consists of 12 variations on the theme "La Ritirata di Madrid" (The Return of the Guard of Madrid). The tapping begins very quietly, the music intensifies in agreement with the approaching troops, and then becomes pianissimo again with the soldiers departing.
