Description:
Nicolò Paganini’s output for string trio forms a small but significant corpus comprising of five works of varying length, formal structure and technical levels: the Serenade in F major M.S. 115, the Terzetto in A minor M.S. 116, the Terzetto concertante in D major M.S. 114, the Terzetto in D major M.S. 69 and the Serenata in C major M.S. 17, which is published here. Made up of four movements, it was dedicated to his sister Dominica Paganini on the occasion of her wedding. The work highlights the viola as the high voice of the trio, whilst the guitar does not merely provide accompaniment but, together with the strings, actively participates in the musical dialogue. This critical edition concludes with the brilliant Polacca, chosen by Paganini to replace the Rondò that he composed previously, which is included here in the appendix.
