Description:
The Sextet op. 40 in C minor from 1852 is the first work in music history for this combination of instruments. We do not know what motivated the composer to write this work, which combines "her" instrument with the wind quintet, which her teacher Anton Reicha, even if he did not invent it, led to its first great peak. Farrenc treats the winds less prominently than in the Nonet op. 38 and the latter's colorfulness is also not achieved. Nevertheless, the sextet is a worthwhile and rewarding piece that has found its place in concert programs in recent years. Louise Farrenc's chamber music in particular is the reason why she is one of the few women of the 19th century to still be played today - and not for emancipatory reasons, but because of the high quality of her compositions, which are in no way inferior to those of her male colleagues.
