Description:
Johann Heinricht Rolle was born in Quedlinburg in 1716. He was appointed music director of the town of Magedburg in 1752. The cantata "Siehe Finsternis, bedeckt das Erdreich und Dunkel der Völker" is intended for Christmas. However, we do not know the year of the first performance. The libretto was written by Johann Samuel Patzke. The cantata consists of 6 movements, framed by an extended and festively orchestrated opening chorus and a simple four-part chorale movement. The first movement is a special feature with its original harmony and contrasting tempi.
