Description:
Skeleton at the Feast was composed in 2017 for the Trio Virado and premiered in 2019 in Joplin, Missouri. The work is based on an ancient tradition described by Plutarch, in which a skeleton or mummy was presented during a banquet to remind the guests of the transience of life in the midst of the festivities. The work explores the various reactions to such an encounter with one’s own mortality: humor, denial, fear, reflection, and ultimately acceptance. The "skeleton theme," initially introduced by the flute alone, serves as the starting point for numerous musical transformations and emotional reactions. Cheerful and playful passages alternate with somber and unsettling moments. In the end, the music conveys a sense of peace and reconciliation, as if each guest had found their own way to accept the reminder of mortality.
