In 1966, New York clarinetists Jack Kreiselman and Daniel H. Leeson were engaged to play the two Mendelssohn concert pieces at the Brooklyn Museum (broadcast live on WNYC radio). Daniel Leeson asked Richard Lane (they served together in the US Army Band in 1950) to write an additional work for the trio to complement this program... Daniel Leeson recalls: 'Lane agreed and after the first rehearsal we were all enthusiastic about the work. Later he also agreed that a bassoon could be used as an alternative to the bass horn in order to extend the performance possibilities. I am particularly pleased that this charming work is finally accessible thanks to this very well-kept edition. Editor's note: An alternative bass clarinet part as a basset horn substitute is also included here.
